DeKalb Fleet Becomes a Vehicle to Success

Apprenticeship Program
The Fleet Management apprenticeship program was envisioned byCommissioner Mereda Davis Johnson in partnership with DeKalb County FleetManagement and Georgia Piedmont Technical College launched on September 4th, 2018.
The four Fleet Management apprenticeship positions are currently filled and the students are undergoing a rigorous 2 year training for the Fire/Rescue, Tire, Body, Automotive or Lubrication shop. Each student who completes the program is offered a full-time position with DeKalb Fleet, and awarded a two year degree equivalent to the Georgia Piedmont Technical College’s curriculum.
Thanks to Robert Gordon the Director of Fleet Management , Leroy Young and Shannon Fink with Dekalb Fleet, and those from DeKalb HR Jadia Haynes, Jami Mack, Mark Todd, and Fabienne Niles for a job well done and making this possible.

DeKalb SPLOST Program Paves 35 Miles, 107 Roads
First 100 miles to be
complete by September
DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County contractors have finished resurfacing 35 miles of roads in DeKalb through funding provided by the county’s special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST). More than 100 roads and streets have been paved, including Norman Road, Rockbridge Road, McLendon Road and Mountain Oaks Parkway.
Roving Rangers Explore Parks Across Atlanta
New Parks Partnership Promotes Outdoor Discovery, Learning
ATLANTA – Parks across Atlanta are working together to provide more fun for kids and families. The new Roving Junior Ranger Program is a self-guided, interactive tour of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area; Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area; Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park; Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park; Panola Mountain State Park; Sweetwater Creek State Park; and Stone Mountain Park. Kids can pick up a Roving Ranger Passport at any one of these participating parks. Earn the “Roving Ranger” Emblem of Honor when you finish!
The Roving Ranger Passport program will kick off on National Kids to Parks Day (May 18th). This day celebrates the importance of our parks and getting outdoors for kids of all ages.

Our office has received several calls from constituents regarding the relocation of the East Police Precinct in DeKalb County presently located in the City of Lithonia. At this time the County is engaged in a study to determine the best options for expansion of Public Safety in unincorporated DeKalb. As updates become available, be assured that my office will always keep you informed on any new developments regarding DeKalb County business.

DeKalb Continues Brannon Hill Blight Removal Efforts
DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County is set to demolish 56 dilapidated and neglected units at Brannon Hill Condominiums. In 2017, CEO Michael Thurmond allocated $3.8 million in funds approved by the Board of Commissioners to enhance county blight-fighting initiatives and address derelict properties.
DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approve funding for improvements to Redan Recreation Center
On Tuesday, April 23rd, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved a motion made by Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson to designate $20,000 for upgrades to the security system for Redan Recreation Center Tennis Courts.
Commissioner Davis Johnson’s motion passed unanimously. Upgrades will begin within the coming weeks.

Mobile Career Center
May Schedule
DECATUR, Ga. – WorkSource DeKalb announces its Mobile Career Center schedule for May. The center will be stationed at locations throughout DeKalb County to help put DeKalb County citizens back to work.
District 5 Events
Summer Transition Center
The DeKalb School District is hostingtheir third Summer Transition Centers across the district in June. If you know of any DeKalb seniors or recent graduate who still need help with their college process, didn’t make any plans, their plans changed, or just have questions, please tell them to come toany of the locations listed on the attached flyer. This is not just for students who have college aspirations,all options will be discussed. Also, due to capacity, this event is limited to 2019 graduates or other recent graduates at this time.

DECATUR, GA – DeKalb County Superior Court Clerk Debra DeBerry is hosting May Passport Day, Saturday, May 18, 2019, 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., to accept passport applications and to provide passport information to U.S. citizens. No Appointment necessary. You may apply for a passport for routine or expedited service. DeKalb Clerk of Superior Court, along with hundreds of local acceptance facilities around the country, are joining the Department of State in hosting May Passport Day as a national passport acceptance and outreach event.
