DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond to Deliver Two State of the County Addresses
DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond will give his outlook for 2019 during two State of the County addresses in April.
Business leaders and other community partners are invited to a State of the County address to be delivered during a ticketed luncheon on Thursday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the
Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia, 4355 Ashford Dunwoody Rd., Atlanta, GA 30346.
CEO Thurmond also will deliver a State of the County Address during a community breakfast on Saturday, April 27, at 10 a.m., at
Greenforest Community Baptist Church, 3188 Rainbow Dr., Decatur, GA 30034.
This event is free and open to the public.
DeKalb to Provide SPLOST Updates During Open Houses
DeKalb County has scheduled three open houses in April to allow residents to review projects paid for by the new 1-percent SPLOST tax.
The locations and dates of the open house are:
  • April 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur;
  • April 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Central DeKalb Senior Center, 1346 McConnell Drive in Decatur;
  • April 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Lou Walker Senior Center, 2538 Panola Road in Lithonia.

Mobile Career Center
April Schedule
DECATUR, Ga. – WorkSource DeKalb announces its Mobile Career Center schedule for April. The center will be stationed at locations throughout DeKalb County to help put DeKalb County citizens back to work.
DeKalb CEO’s State of the County Breakfast: Donations Will Benefit Foster children
DECATUR, Ga. – Foster children will be the beneficiaries of donations collected during a community breakfast sponsored by DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond [see more].
New DeKalb exhibit showcases one of Georgia’s oldest African-American communities
A new exhibit showcasing the history of Flat Rock, one of the oldest African-American communities in Georgia and a part of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, is now open at the DeKalb History Center. Developed in partnership with the Flat Rock Archives, this exhibit displays artifacts gathered and preserved by the Archives from the 150+ years of the community’s existence.
The exhibit at the DeKalb History Center will continue until February of 2021. Admission is free. History Center hours of operation are Mon-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“YOUTH CREATING CHANGE”
“Our mission is to support youth as they pursue and complete a job training or certification program, employment, or
post-secondary education.”
Who is Eligible
• Youth ages 16-24 guidelines and reside in
target area.
• Youth out-of-school.
• Youth who have had current or previous
involvement with the Juvenile Justice System.
• DeKalb residents that live in the following zip codes: Clarkston 30021, Scottdale 30079, Decatur 30032,Stone Mountain 30083 & Lithonia 30058

Kites Festival set at
Wade Walker Park
DeKalb County will host the first “Kites Over DeKalb Festival” on April 14th, 2019.

12 p.m.-4 p.m.
The free family event is open for all ages and will feature music, bounce houses, kite-flying demonstrations, contests, and food vendors. Participants may bring their own kites or create one at the free kite-making station while supplies last.
DeKalb County
University Bridges
University Bridges will attract several applicants, with the mission is to select 30 students who are indifferent with the decision of post-secondary education. These students will join campus leaders for a 3 day, 2 night experience at Savannah State University, Georgia Southern University and Columbus Technical College. Throughout their stay, faculty and campus leaders will equip these students with essential fundamental elements of earning a college degree. They will learn certain aspects such as the importance of education, financial literacy, community involvement, protecting their brand, success in networking for the future, and more.
