DeKalb County News
We are continuing to “Move DeKalb Forward”. On Tuesday, February 26, 2019 the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners passed the FY2019 budget with overwhelming support.
FY2019 Amended Budget
In this budget, I appropriated $500,000 reserved for future development of sidewalks, green space, and parks in District 5. This budget also addresses financial stability, retiree cost of living adjustments, residential property tax relief, continued investment for DeKalb County employees, Public Safety enhancements, funding for two purchasing compliance officers, funding for the South River, Child Well Being initiatives, and funding for a anti – litter campaign to help fight blight.

DeKalb CEO Names Three MARTA Board Nominees
DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond has nominated three county residents to serve on the MARTA board of directors.
“DeKalb’s nominees are dedicated civic and community leaders who have demonstrated a deep commitment to the county,” said CEO Thurmond. “The addition of these three members will be a tremendous asset in helping the county strongly advocate for continuous transit and ridership improvements.” [see more]
DeKalb Magistrate Court to host Community Education Day

The DeKalb County Magistrate Court will host its annual Magistrate Court 101: Community Education Day on Saturday, March 2. Chief Magistrate Judge Berryl A. Anderson created the program in 2013 to provide an opportunity for school-aged children to learn about the court system. The current program is designed for middle/high school-aged students and adults. Activities include interactive sessions on the Georgia court system with a focus on the DeKalb County Magistrate Court, a court tour, and a mock-trial exercise, and is held in the courtroom to provide a realistic experience for attendees.
DeKalb Rainy Day Fund Grows to $113 Million
Budget surplus to support retirees, protect environment
DEKALB, Ga. – DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond announced that the county’s projected FY2019 rainy fund balance has grown 10 percent, from $103 million to $113 million. The total represents two months of reserves to finance county operations [Read more].

2020 Census Jobs
The Census Bureau plans to hire thousands of residents of DeKalb County
These jobs are temporary, flexible, and pay well ($17-24/hr). Hiring has started and will continue until early next year. This is a great opportunity for residents who are housewives, college students, retirees, part time employees, teachers out for the summer or anyone looking to make extra money in their spare time. Also veterans will receive will 5-10 points added to their application which moves them higher up on the hiring list.

Parks & Greenspace Conference
Each spring, Park Pride hosts the annual Parks & Greenspace Conference, the largest parks conference in the southeast, showcasing thought leaders from Atlanta and across the nation. Through education and inspiration, the conference focuses on best practices for companies and individuals who are united by a common desire to improve parks and strengthen communities.

DeKalb Clerk of Superior Court to host
Free Notary Training March 8, 2019
Decatur, GA – DeKalb County Superior Court Clerk Debra DeBerry and the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority are hosting two free notary training sessions on Friday, March 8, 2019. The first session is 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM and the second session is 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM.
This training workshop is open to the public and highly recommended to anyone who is a notary public in the State of Georgia or would like to become one. It is important to remember that a notary public should perform their duties to the utmost extent of the law, failure to do so could result in costly lawsuits and penalties as a notary is liable for his or her actions.

DECATUR, Ga. – WorkSource DeKalb announces its Mobile Career Center schedule for February. The center will be stationed at locations throughout DeKalb County to help put DeKalb County citizens back to work.

DeKalb Demolishes its First Blighted Property of 2019 in the Murfield Subdivision
 We are continuing to “Move DeKalb Forward” and we have been listening to the communities request. This week our community spotlight is for the Murfield Subdivision which was the first location in DeKalb County to be demolished in 2019. Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson said, “We are dedicated to eradicating blight in DeKalb, and this is just the beginning. We want people to know that property upkeep is a must in DeKalb County. We are looking forward to demolishing other blighted properties in DeKalb.
