Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson is proud to recognize the achievement of Sydney Wilson who has made history as the youngest EVER to be admitted to Spelman College. “It is remarkable to see that history is being made right here in DeKalb. We celebrate Sydney and look forward to her continued success”, said Johnson.

DeKalb Fleet Apprenticeship Program Offers Trainees The Chance To Learn And Earn
Four recruits are gaining hands-on experience in the automotive world, thanks to DeKalb County Fleet Management, Georgia Piedmont Technical College and DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson, District 5.
The students are among the first to participate in the DeKalb Fleet Apprenticeship Program.

DeKalb offers to pick up, throw away bulky items for free this summer
Are you a DeKalb County resident looking to get rid on an old couch or large appliance? If so, you’re in luck.
The county’s sanitation division is offering free residential bulky item curbside collection on certain days throughout the month of June. Bulky items include things like furniture and appliances.

Operation Spring Clean Sweep begins June 7
DeKalb County Sanitation Division’s Operation Spring Clean Sweep 2019 begins Friday, June 7, according to a press release. The initiative includes free residential curbside collection, paper shredding, litter collection and roadside enhancement activities.

DeKalb SPLOST Program Paves 35 Miles, 107 Roads
First 100 miles to be
complete by September
DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County contractors have finished resurfacing 35 miles of roads in DeKalb through funding provided by the county’s special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST). More than 100 roads and streets have been paved, including Norman Road, Rockbridge Road, McLendon Road and Mountain Oaks Parkway.

DeKalb Continues Brannon Hill Blight Removal Efforts
DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County is set to demolish 56 dilapidated and neglected units at Brannon Hill Condominiums. In 2017, CEO Michael Thurmond allocated $3.8 million in funds approved by the Board of Commissioners to enhance county blight-fighting initiatives and address derelict properties.
DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approve funding for improvements to Redan Recreation Center
On Tuesday, April 23rd, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved a motion made by Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson to designate $20,000 for upgrades to the security system for Redan Recreation Center Tennis Courts.
Commissioner Davis Johnson’s motion passed unanimously. Upgrades will begin within the coming weeks.

Mobile Career Center
May Schedule
DECATUR, Ga. – WorkSource DeKalb announces its Mobile Career Center schedule for May. The center will be stationed at locations throughout DeKalb County to help put DeKalb County citizens back to work.

Marbut Road Closure
Temporary closure to replace gravity storm sewer line
DECATUR, Ga. – Marbut Road, between Lithonia Industrial Boulevard and Phillips Road, will be closed to through-traffic beginning at9 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, through 9 p.m., Friday, June 7, to replace a gravity storm sewer line.
Summer Transition Center
The DeKalb School District is hostingtheir third Summer Transition Centers across the district in June. If you know of any DeKalb seniors or recent graduate who still need help with their college process, didn’t make any plans, their plans changed, or just have questions, please tell them to come toany of the locations listed on the attached flyer. This is not just for students who have college aspirations,all options will be discussed. Also, due to capacity, this event is limited to 2019 graduates or other recent graduates at this time.

Beadweaving: A Just My Imagination Workshop
Ages 9 to 12 years
Athens artist and teacher Toni Carlucci will demonstrate the process of simple bead weaving and participants will use beads to create their own woven bead work. Open to the first 25 participants.
