“A Moment With Mereda”
A Personal Note from Your Commissioner
Good afternoon District 5 Family, Friends, & Neighbors:
Happy Juneteenth weekend. Today, we celebrate the first official holiday for Juneteenth in DeKalb County. We celebrated and commemorated the holiday with a beautiful celebration in Downtown Decatur. Thank you to everyone who came out; we truly had a wonderful time celebrating freedom day together! As you may know, the federal government passed a law making Juneteenth a federal holiday yesterday. While we are thankful for this tremendous progress, I want you to know, it all started with DeKalb County in 2020 when the resolution to make Juneteenth a County holiday was officially passed by the Board of Commissioners.
I want to invite all Homeowners Associations, Civic Organizations, and Community Groups to register to attend our 2021 DeKalb HOA Boot Camp. I am honored to co-host with my fellow Commissioner, Larry Johnson. The Boot Camp is virtual and will occur on Saturday, June 26th, from 10:00 am to noon. Your organization will get critical information ranging from understanding county policies and procedures to homeowner’s rights and board management. You must register to attend. To register, please click here!
I would also like to invite you to join us for our “Don’t Wait, Vaccinate!” event on Saturday, June 26th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Lou Walker Center. To register for that event, please click here. Now, more than ever, I encourage everyone eligible to get vaccinated and wear your mask if you have not yet received your vaccination. Remember, “Don’t Wait, Vaccinate!” For more information on where you can receive your COVID – 19 vaccine, please visit vaccines.gov
If you have any upcoming virtual events and want my office to attend, please feel free to send us an invitation by clicking here. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your District 5 Commissioner! Have a great weekend!
Yours in service,
Mereda Davis Johnson

A Georgia town is celebrating Juneteenth for the first time in the shadow America’s largest Confederate monument
(CNN) After decades standing in the shadows of the nation’s largest Confederate monument, a predominantly Black town in Georgia is trying to break ties with its own racist history.
This weekend, Stone Mountain, Georgia, will hold its first Juneteenth celebration and honor the end of slavery.

All Georgia residents age 16 and over are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine is in high demand and supply is very limited.
